In this talk, we will define the notion of a scheme and discuss the relationship between schemes and varieties, following section II.2 of Hartshorne's book "Algebraic Geometry". It will assume basic understanding of commutative algebra, affine/projective varieties, and sheaves. Please note that the seminar will meet in Wachman 15 (basement).
