Following both Zagier and Diamond & Shurman, we will introduce theta series, a historically significant class of modular forms. We begin with the simplest such theta series, the Jacobi theta series, and prove that it is indeed a modular form. We then apply this theta series to the problem of writing positive integers as sums of squares, and end with an introduction to more fully generalized theta series.
